Frans mentored so many people from different walks of life and areas of research and scholarship. His generosity, humor, and intellect made him very special. It is not comprehensible that he is no longer with us. I share a photo from a workshop in Sicily on morality. My daughter studies at Emory and I will miss the lunches with him to hear about his latest book when I visit Atlanta. All the very best to Catherine and Frans' extensive family and friends, Melanie

Thank you Melanie. Frans was very fond of you and had a lot of respect for your work! And you are right, it is not comprehensible that he is no longer with us. Especially because until mid July, there was no reason to believe that there was anything wrong with him, health wise. He fought. We fought. We tried everything. He did not want to die. And until the very last weeks he wanted to believe that he could survive this monstrous cancer. I know life is not in the business of being fair... but it does seem so terribly unfair, that he, of all people would have to die like this.
