I first met Frans in roughly 1994, at a small program of the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research, which we both attended regularly in those days. I was immediately struck by his unusual blend of intelligence, humility, passion, kindness, and wit. Over the years, I learned so much from him. His impact of course is huge. But so is his international reach. I traveled to a remote area of Tanzania in 2021. There were few books. But somehow Fran’s latest had already made it there. It's some comfort to know that there are bits of him everywhere.

Thank you Owen for this lovely tribute. And also for your condoleance letter. Yes, I do remember you. We had a nice conversation on our screen porch, here in Georgia, years ago! Frans was fond of you and truly enjoyed those Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research meetings. I attended one at Lake Tahoe, years ago! I still cannot fathom the enormity of his death. Utterly painful.
