Dear Frans,
I hardly know where to begin. Catherine has lost her loving husband, science a highly talented researcher, the animal world a friend, and I, my greatest role model.
As a young guy, while my friends had posters of rock stars on their walls, I idolized someone else: Frans de Waal, the leading primatologist. No posters on my wall, but your books in my bookshelf.
I learned so much from you. You were so passionate, so eager to discover, but most importantly, to share that knowledge. Your insights into the emotional lives of primates have fundamentally changed the way we humans view animals. You taught us that empathy, fairness, and the capacity to grieve are not uniquely human traits, but qualities we share with other animals. We are all mourning now...
The impact you have had on me is enormous. You were the reason I eventually entered into science communication. Your work and books will continue to influence forever. The mark you left on primatology and ethology is indelible. And as long as I live, I too will continue to turn to your work and legacy.
Farewell, Frans, and give my regards to Mama and Kuif up there. They have their human friend back...
Sincerely,
Nick
