Frans and I met in Groningen where we together studied jackdaws and we both had a tame jackdaw. The cunning little bird's daily presence taught me something that Frans probably already knew, namely how intelligent animals, and Corvids in particular, can be, - and how much of a personality. This was all shortly after Niko Tinbergen, Konrad Lorenz and Max von Frisch had received the Nobel Prize for their studies on animal behavior. In his studies on primates Frans took the studies of animal and human behavior a huge step further and I would have loved to see him live to receive the Nobel Price for what he added to our understanding of behavior.
